INSPIRATION: Reinterpreting Sheila Hicks by Lauren Chong Sng

Over her long career the artist Sheila Hicks has included small weavings among her works, many of which were chronicled in a 2006 book Sheila Hicks: Weaving as a Metaphor.  I am drawn to the variation, her thoughtfulness and meaning behind the weavings and, despite the seeming simplicity, her complex elaboration in aspects of her cloths.  

Studying this book gave me an idea.  I was feeling stuck and wanted a technical challenge.  Using this book as a course, I began working my way through about a dozen of her weaves, each as a separate lesson, beginning with the frontispiece.  It became a home study course for me, even though the book was not organized as a teaching aid.

My intentions were never to copy Ms. Hicks.  Every weaver’s yarn stashes are their own because fiber and color selections are unique and stashes are assembled from distinctly different resources.  To weave from this book was a period of personal creative growth.  Here I present a few of my versions alongside original inspirations by Sheila Hicks.
