How to Choose Sett Combs on a Chloe Pocket Loom

How to Choose Sett Combs on a Chloe Pocket Loom

Sett is the term used to describe how far apart your warp threads (these are the threads that go vertically up and down your loom) are horizontally on the loom. In tapestry, we refer to sett in EPI (ends per inch) or DPI (dents per inch). For example, a sett of 8 EPI means there are eight warp threads in an inch vertically on the loom. A lower sett number means the warp threads are set further apart and a higher sett number means they are closer together. Generally speaking, for thicker weft and larger beads, you want to weave at a smaller sett.

On a Chloe Pocket Loom, sett is determined by combs on the top and bottom of the loom. These combs can be switched out to accommodate different setts. You choose the same number sett comb as you would a warp coil for our classic style looms. (e.g. an 8 EPI comb is the same as an 8 EPI warp coil.)

We have 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 dent combs available for our Chloe Pocket Looms.

Sett For Tapestry Weaving

For tapestry weaving, choosing a set depends both on the thickness of your warp and weft. We have a great blog post on choosing your sett for tapestry weaving here that discusses why choosing the correct sett is important and how to go about figuring this out.

We also have a helpful crowd-sourced sett list that you can find here.

Sett For Bead Weaving:

To figure out which sett comb to use for bead weaving, the beads you plan on weaving on a needle and measure an inch. Then, count how many beads are in that inch. The number of beads minus one is the comb that will be used. There is some leeway in this, and depending on the beads you are using, it might not work out perfectly (numerically), just close.

Using a smaller (lower number) comb is better than using a larger (higher number) comb. There are also some exceptions to this rule, particularly with 11/0 Miyuki Delica or Toho Treasure  beads. For these, we recommend using the 18 dent comb for thin pieces and the 16 dent for wider pieces.

Here's our cheat sheet"

Cylinder Beads (Miyuki Delica or Toho Treasure)

8/0- 9 per inch: Use the 8 dent comb
10/0- 14 per inch: Use the 12 dent comb
11/0- 19 per inch: Use the 18 dent comb except when doing very wide pieces, when you should use the 16 dent comb.

Seed Beads:

6/0- 8 per inch: Use the 12 dent comb warped every-other-dent for 6 dents per inch.
8/0- 12 per inch: Use the 10 or 12 dent comb depending on what size warp you are using. For example, when using the bead cord as warp, because it is thicker, you will use the 10 dent comb. But if you are just weaving straight beads using beading thread as warp, you will use the 12 dent comb.
11/0- 14 to 15 per inch: Use the 14 dent comb.
